Eastern Europe has this strange identity crisis where it's European but not Western. The way I see it, you are either one or the other. You cannot belong to Europe as a cultural entity without being a part of Western civilization. There is no middle ground, if you are not Western, you are Eastern (Asian).
So if countries like Russia, Bulgaria, Ukraine, Belarus, etc. reject a Western identity they are not really Europeans. They are just Asians living in the wrong continent. I've always found this sentiment a strong one, considering EE has a history more similar to non-European nations compared to Western Europe.
Eastern European people have a history of badmouthing Westerners and hate being associated with them.
So really we should all acknowledge EE's are just Asians with white skin because looking at their history of affairs, it is clear they are just that. Communism, traditionalism, dictatorial powers, etc. these are features of Asian states not European ones.
It's no wonder there are no Muslim savages in Eastern Europe. Because they are already savages themselves.

you are right when you say Eastern Europeans are not Western or European, but you are wrong when you say they live on the wrong continent.
if you limit Europe to the area West of the Iron Curtain, then it's no stretch to say that Europe or The West is what's West of the Iron Curtain plus Hungary, Slovenia, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Croatia, and what's East of these is Eurasia, i.e. former Soviet Union with all its republics minus the ones mentioned, plus Romania, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia (minus what's been mentioned), Mongolia.
Eurasia has a cultural ground of itself, but has some influence from Ottoman space, Greater Persia space and even steppe Turkic/Mongolic space.
and of course you need to allow for regional variation, for example Yugoslavia vs Mongolia, as you allow for the West for Greece vs Spain vs UK vs Scandinavia vs the Baltics...
