Boston University Targets Racism in Medical School Curriculum

The University’s School of Medicine recommended new medical school curriculum that addresses racial healthcare disparities.

November 30, 2021 - Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) announced modifications to its medical school curriculum to dismantle systemic medical racism and address healthcare disparities. This new initiative is based on finding by researchers from BUSM published in the journal of Academic Medicine.

The researchers from BUSM launched a blueprint for all medical institutions to use to tackle racial healthcare disparities and systemically racist frameworks in medicine.

“The findings and recommendations of the working group were released during the summer of 2020 as our nation mourned the continued, violent loss of Black Lives. People were hungry for change and a community already deeply committed to the work of equity in healthcare, there was even greater momentum for change,” senior author Shoumita Dasgupta, Ph.D., professor of medicine and assistant dean of admissions at BUSM said in the report.
