Actually, i think the few "French-South" samples are actually from Bearn and the Provence ones are not very reliable.

French South in current G25 datasheet is basically a 80% Basque reference, we have more detailed regional reference from South France Pyrenees from that paper of Basques and peri-Basques, (Basques and not-so-much-Basques-but-close-to-them).

I wouldn't expect anything else. I don't understand the mentality of the French with their ban on genetic testing. Lots of French do take the tests though. What are the French afraid of? They can't be trying to hide that French is an ethnicity as much as any other European country is? It's pretty frustrating because France is such an important country to understand the genetic history of Europe.

Lara Cassidy's section was most interesting to me as the Medieval period hasn't really been discussed much. I did know previously about Ranelagh, Co Roscommon and that they were looking at Medieval genomes there.

Most of the Ranelagh genomes have ancestry with Irish mostly from Connacht and Northwest Ulster but there was a female outlier there who shares her ancestry with English and Northern English clusters (Red). This was also verified by Durham University by isotopical analysis and she has values similar to Viking period burials from Yorkshire.



I hope they publish some further information on this period.

But by contrast Occitanie is quite close to some Northern French references, first time I checked this reference I expected it to be more "southern.shifted".

If it's any consolation, many of the Spanish references are also quite unusable.
