Not exactly. Quite many other Slavs were very unsatisfied with Austrian rule. Neoabsolutist Era was the worst.

It was the first high school built in the region, established in 1808 by the Austrian Empire. Initially, the language of instruction was only German, although the great majority of the pupils came from the Slovene Lands. In 1895, the first classes with Slovene as the language of instruction were established. German nationalists in Austria-Hungary fiercely opposed this move, which resulted in a government crisis and fall of the cabinet of prince Alfred III. zu Windisch-Grätz.

I did not live in the DDR but was there as a visitor and three times even 2 weeks (visiting relatives). And a lot after the reunification, ofc.

As for your question I'd say: The insecurity of the own professional fate.

I think the biggest and lasting cultural shock will have been for DDR "elites". Not necessarly just political ones but also for these having higher level professions. Because most of them did not have a high intellectual level for pan German standards. (The population of the DDR had been devastated by abt. 1/4 of the population, regularly the most skilled ones, having emigrated to Western Germany.) The former DDR "elites" were later facing a more "normal" population structure, because a lot of intelligent and skilled people from Western Germany were coming (often coming back) and filling the gaps. This led to that you in the highest social layer sometimes have abt. 95% of the people coming from Western Germany (not necessarly in ancestry, but as for where they lived at the day of the fall of the Berlin wall). Of course this also has led to some social problems, but the inferiority of the former "elites" is so obvious and natural that the mentioned conditions today are fully accepted.
