"Wokeness" was originally a term coined by some African-Americans to mean "being alert to racial discrimination and injustice". Yet nowadays, "wokeness" is (often pejoratively) used to refer to a whole raft of other causes and beliefs too. Particularly prominent among these are feminism and transgenderism. The irony here is that many White feminists are, at a minimum, deeply ambivalent about African-American culture, which many of them regard as too unreconstructed, macho and sexual.
