Russian Empire allowed marriages from 7th tier of kinship. People normally avoided marriages with people from their own village, taking the brides in other villages, sometimes non-Slavic (but Orthodox Christian ones). My ancestry (Moldavian grandma and Greek great-grandma) is typical for the south, when Slavic men seeked for brides in other villages, it was also someway promoted for assimilation of local non-Slav descendants of settlers in Novorossia.
