While Figure 8 may have been his artistic peak, Elliot's Roman Candle is his best album in my opinion. His lyrics were of this mundane, angsty teenager and drug user sort, but he sounded incredible.

I listened to that Kate & Anna McGarrigle album yesterday, and one song always strikes me.
"going back to Harlan" mentions some of the best-known and most disturbing bluegrass/ folk songs. This includes straight-out murder ballads like "willie Moore" and "shady grove"
For whatever reason, they are called "nursery rhymes".in this song.
If one knows the origin of things like "London bridge is falling down" and "ring around the Rosie", they aren't that far off.
Classical fix...a different set of Canadian sisters doing a different type of music...
