This question came up somewhere else and it can be applied to other countries as well but in this thread let’s stick to this question.
Note this explanation: It is referred to the world as a whole and to all times, which in this case means the degree of being known times the period of time. If you imagine a diagram then it’s the area under the curve. Or to put it this way: An individual that is known by 10% of the world population for a period of 100 years is equally well known as an individual that is known by 100% of the world population for 10 years.
I’m curious.

First name that popped into my head after seeing your thread was Linnaeus, but that's just me. After that Celsius.
Most popular as of now is probably ABBA members jointly (but are you really famous if people only know you for being in a group?)
Would like to see this thread about countries too.
Spoiler!

Wow, you knew for Celsius. I actually didn't.
Jointly? Well, the question will have to be estimated for them individually / namely.
What do you think about Alfred Nobel and Astrid Lindgren? Olof Palme? As for Germany and being much affected by the 30 Year's War also king Gustaf Adolf is well known and if you consider that he was even much more known 300 years ago and is now known for centuries, he will score pretty high according to the told rules. But I'm not sure how known he is worldwide.

I forgot about Nobel, he is likely number 1, and having the world's famous awards named after you helps. Astrid Lindgren, Olof Palme - I'd be surprised if even 5% of Westerners had heard or knew about them tbh, let alone the rest of the world. Also forgot Greta Thunberg, and Bjorn Borg is surely in the top 5 most famous Swedes, even 40 years later.
Ulrika Jonsson might be the most famous Swede in Britain![]()

In my time, Karl XII was very well known due to the school program.
Otherwise it could be either Karlsson or the Little bro
