The Dekimpe bakery shop, established in Tervuren (Flanders), was recently called to order by the governor of Flemish Brabant because a member of its staff allegedly did not speak Dutch with a customer. The baker Didier Dekimpe said he was surprised by the letter he received.
One of the bakery employees reportedly recently asked a customer if he could serve him in French instead of Dutch. The customer does not seem to have appreciated it and immediately sent a complaint to the office of the provincial governor, Jan Spooren. The latter has since written a letter to the bakery asking him to speak Dutch to his customers.
"I do not really understand why the governor goes so far as to write a letter on this subject", reacts Didier Dekimpe. "People from different backgrounds work in our company and everyone has to do their best. We always greet a customer with 'Goeiedag, hello'. If that person replies 'Goeiedag', we speak Flemish. It's as simple as that" , he explains.
