at the moment Western Moldova is largely Romanian and Eastern Moldova (the actual Rep. of Moldova) is mostly a Romanian-speaking culturally post-Soviet bilingual with Russian territory, so it is definitely not in the same boat with Romania, culturally, although many Moldovans are studying since highscool or at most since college in Romania and many stay in Romania afterwards, these are the pro-European, pro-unification ones, while the ones at home I'd say are 50-50, many would like EU citizenship through Romania for easier travel abroad, but that's all they want.
Moldova is a bit of a fake name for what happened in the region after its annexation by Romania and Russia in the 19th century - the only way to bring back a separate Moldovan culture would be to standardize the most extreme form of the Moldovan dialect and recover archaic words pre-19th century Romanianization, which was made in a time Romanian just got very updated with French.
although I am a Moldovenist in the administrative way, not the ethnic way, in which I favour a multi-ethnic Moldova and in general I favour territories, not nations, but even so there is very little traction for these ideas in Moldova, so my opinions of autonomy or independence for Western Moldova are not shared by most Moldovans, and I am also not in favour of annexation of Rep. of Moldova, which again is against the mainstream feeling of Romanians, they are for it.
it will be best if Moldovans decide for themselves, not Bucharest and not Moscow and definitely not Washington

I don't know what the future looks like for Moldova, but here are my thoughts.
I don't support a Romania-Moldova unification. Yes, Moldovans and Romanians used to be one people, but ever since they got annexed by the Russians/Soviets, I now consider them a separate ethnic group who happen to speak Romanian. Many years of brainwashing, heavy Russian/Soviet influence, colonization with other ethnic groups and forced mixing have definitely had their effects there. And then, there's also the complicated issue with Transnistria. Moldovans themselves do not identify as Romanian for the most part. Hence, I have no specific attachment to Moldova or Moldovans.
I want Moldova to stay independent and join EU on their own merits. I don't see them joining NATO though, the majority of Moldovans are anti-NATO based on statistics and what Maia Sandu says. That already shows a big difference in mentality from Romanians.
Edit: voted "stand alone path towards EU/NATO".
