That is precisely why humanity needs to explore space, to search for resources, the earth's resources will one day run out and when that happens there will be a catastrophe, we will only be able to move forward if we explore the last frontier that we have left, In space there are many places to obtain resources, including another home.

Mars, the moon, and maybe Calixto, Ganymede and Titan in the next decades.
When they start colonizing exoplanets outside our solar system will more likely take centuries.

Electronics and some other fields of technology developed rapidly. OTOH space technology is still in the 60s or 70s. Following this pace we'll colonize moon in several centuries from now or never.

Nothing is gonna happen until at least a few centuries. Very small number of humans have traveled 1 lightsecond from this planet and stayed there a few days. Mars is 12 lightminutes away and the radiation during travel and stay there is too much for humans.
A base on the moon would be a major achievement.
