Default Why are there far more different species of felines than canines?

While among canines I can only think of dogs, wolves and foxes (and even they are fairly distantly related), among felines there are lots of different species: domestic cats themselves, lions, tigers, cheetahs, pumas, jaguars, lynxes, leopards... Why is this?

Maybe because most cats hunt alone so they are specialized in certain prey whereas canines are mostly pack (social) hunters.

Oh and you also have coyotes.

So felines have been able to kill off real or imaginary competition more than canines then?

    Cats hunt alone, unlike dogs.
