maybe because they are more southerneuro influenced and US people more northern? but i dont know it for sure, i was never in americas. just a wild guess. probably the majority is mestizo/castizo. but ive heard spaniards and italians were sometimes taken as mexicans.

on various forums ive read it, that sometimes all kinds of people get mistaken for mexican including some southern euros. cant remember exactly where since i was on so many forums already.

yes a southern european cannot look like a mestizo but a mestizo can look like a southerneuropean if his european side is strong (ie castizo etc.) but i guess most such people in the US identify as mexicans thats why.
