Sorry, but this may be offensive to some. Nevertheless, let me tell it like it is. The term White or White race didn't really apply or came into play until the Northern Europeans came into contact with non-European people. It is their complexion (Northern Euros) that strengthened the notion of "European whiteness". In other words, when the English, Dutch and Danish came into contact with the outside world people in colonial times. In those days the Northern European race was nearly exclusively confined to Northern Europe. Many people had never seen a group of fair or pale-skinned, light-eyed, light-haired often blond or ginger together at once. Due to the European colonial empires, the Northern European-looking are no longer an "object" of astonishment as it was previously.
Remember the words by the great Italian anthropologist Guiseppe Sergi (an ardent anti - Nordicist) who was fiercely proud of the Mediterranean (unlike many Southern Euros on these threads) said the following about the Mediterranean race:
" the Mediterranean race "in its external characters is a brown human variety, neither white nor negroid, but pure in its elements, that is to say not a product of the mixture of Whites with Negroes or negroid peoples."
It speaks for itself, doesn't it? According to Sergi, the Mediterranean race was the "greatest race in the world." As it was the sole responsible initiator of civilization in antiquity. See, Guiseppe did not even see "whiteness" in the same way you do in the Mediterranean people. He described them as "brown".

If one compared North-Western to Western to South-Western Europe. We can see that the palest to some of the darkest - complected Europeans are found there. I chose three racial phenotypes which are typical to those areas of Europe. I will compare their most common pigmentary characteristics and their facial features which I think are very important in defining the Europid race. I chose the North Atlantid, the West Alpinid and the Atlanto-Mediterranid.
The North Atlantid (native to North - West Europe)
Cephalic index: mesocephalic
Pigmentation
Skin colour: pale, ruddy or freckled
Eye colour: blue
Hair colour: brown
Facial features
Forehead: narrow, sloping
mandibles: small
malars: compressed (as with the Keltic Nordid)
nasal index: hyperleptorrhine
nasal form: prominent and long-tipped
nasal profile: convex or concave
Country with the highest occurrence: Wales (British Isles)
The West Alpinid (native to West Europe)
Cephalic index: hyperbrachycephalic
Pigmentation
Skin colour: fair
Eye colour: brown > blue/green/gray
Hair colour: chestnut brown
Facial Features
Forehead: round and steep
Face: round
Nasal index: leptorrhine > mesorrhine
Nasal form: short and small
Nasal profile: concave and snubbed in female
Mouth: narrow
Lips: thin
Jaw: rounded and soft
Country with the highest occurrence: Luxembourg
The Atlanto - Mediterranid (native to the Mediterranean region of the world)
Cephalic Index: dolicephalic
Pigmentation
Skin colour: fair to light brown
Eye colour: brown
Hair colour: black to brown
Facial features
Forehead: steep
Cheekbones: pronounced
Temples: pronounced
Prognathy: mild
Nasal index: hyperleptorrhine
Nasal profile: straight
Country with the highest occurrence: Portugal (Iberian Peninsula)
