Whenever someone says Gypsy is a Romanian Romanians would say "arrrgh no he is a gypsy fuck off" "dont troll us". They even petitioned to european parliament that gypsies are forbidden from calling themselfes "roma" because it is too similar with "romanian" fortunately they lost that request.
Now this guy is a gypsy and he says, gypsies, moldovans, romanians, etc. are all "romanians" or "made in romania" and "its colorful"... it seems many in romania liked that song ?
The Roma spirit, free and strong, In every heartbeat, in every song.
Through fields and forests, roads unplanned, They roam the world, a nomad band. Beautiful women, heroic men, In the Roma, life’s magic begins again.
"The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep." (John 10:10-11)

Probably people don't get that angry if they're associated with something positive even if they're not this, this is rather a reason for Gypsies to think about this, not for Romanians (who are definetly not Gypsies).

Roma are a population of their own like Ashkenazi Jews. They would be Romanian Roma to differentiate them from Romanians who have a different history and genetic heritage or Hungarian Roma etc. Someone who is Roma would not cluster with Romanians due to their mixed ancestry of European, Asian and Middle Eastern heritage.
I'm sure individual Roma could marry outside of the Roma population and within a few generations their descendants would identify with the larger population whether that be Romanians or some other ethnicity but if Roma keep intermarrying and keep being separate things are going to remain the same and the Roma will continue being their own distinctive group.
