Interesting in Fiume existed significant Italian/Venetian community for centuries and Fiume was never part of the Republic of Venice. They spoke Fiuman (Venetian dialect), today only few percent of people in city speak Fiuman https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiuman_dialect
Ancestors of Fiuman speakers were Venetians which arrived to Fiume as merchants, they were urban population. On the other hand Croatians before 20th century lived in surrounding villages. After WW2 Croatians from surrounding places but also from other regions settled to Fiume in a large number; except them many Serbs, Bosniaks, and even Albanians, Macedonians, Gypsies etc. settled to Fiume in Yugo communist period. In that time Fiume/Rijeka was a prosperous city with strong industry, with one of the largest shipbuilders in Europe etc. Rijeka/Fiume is for decades most multi culti and most liberal city in Croatia.
