Right-wing populists in the government?
The conservative Danish Justice Minister Brian Mikkelsen has spoken out in favour of a coalition including the right-wing populist Danish People's Party (DF). The daily Berlingske Tidende believes it is wrong to reject the idea offhand: "The idea is that the Danish People's Party should be part of a government if this furthers the conservative agenda in Denmark. The parties already see eye to eye on most aspects of immigration and legal policy. The interesting question is whether as part of the government the DF could help to introduce necessary reforms [such as unemployment insurance] and counter Danish reservations about the EU [despite its Euro-scepticism]. Once you're in the government you have to support common projects without reservations. And if you can't you should stick to lending your support from outside and let the government seek the help of other parties regarding issues on which it differs with the DF. ... The key question is how many policy decisions can be made in tandem with the Danish People's Party." (07/08/2009)
