Default Are there any genetic reasons as to why the Scots are paler than the English and Welsh?

I saw a group of Scottish men today in my area and they stood out quite markedly because they were quite pale, even the northern English are not quite as pale and the Welsh often blend in more, they stood out more than some groups of Belgians, Germans and Dutch infact.

I don't think so. It must be because of a a less sunny and more cloudy weather compared to England. And if its true that they are paler than English, it must be by a very marginal difference.

The cloudiest part of Scotland is actually less pale while the sunniest part of Scotland is actually the palest along the eastern coast and the central belt and borders. The difference is marginal but noticeable enough, in the UK there is basically a north east to south west gradient in paleness.

To us, you (Brits) are all pale as heck! However, I know what you mean the Scottish are «*over doing whiteness*». They are just too white. The more Celtic the strain, I think the paler or whiter one gets. Scottish people are closely related to the Irish, thus with the least admixture from pre - Viking days. Scotland also a very high ratio of gingers and are about as freckled as the Irish. The English are our Germanic brethren, they might have some strong Celtic admixture which would make them slightly paler than other Germanics but that’s about it. English, Dutch, Flemish, Germans, we all Western Germanic folks.

The Scottish are pretty pale, dude. Skin type 4 is practically absent in their population. Although with the English and Welsh, it’s still minimal. Scottish people are so pale, we say that they are blue.

That's interesting. I didn't think about it. Some photographic comparisons would be interesting, if you don't mind.

Scots are a bit paler on average, with noticeably more redheads, I can see.

Yes, they are. Only Trolls say that they’re dark.
