So are Welsh and Basque in their respective regions/countries (tick off whichever you prefer).
Now that is probably the main factor. Welsh is rather different from English and Basque isn't even Indo-European.and besides catalan and castillian are quite similar. That helps a lot.

P.S. Welsh has some words from Latin and French less present in English that speakers of Romance languages should recognise: werdd, eglwys, dillun, dimawrdd, dimerched.
