Im afraid it's no that different than anywhere else. People don't care about papers either way, the whole "everybody is French", that ship has sailed for a long time already in real life, even on public TV they don't have the nerves to support that anymore. The state has slowly switched away from the idea of assimilation (as it failed) to integration in the legitimate multi cultural sense "come as you are" but then "stay what you are". As you might imagine they didn't hold a press conference to announce it.
I would say gypsies have less chances of being seen, as part of France at least, than even some oversea territory blacks like from Martinique or Guadeloupe but everything is possible if you have a genuine desire to adopt the culture, codes and language, you might be seen as honorary French in society, people will appreciate the effort at least and judge you individually and not by our ethnicity if you go down that path. Overall the language element is very important but only to some extent as it's still not gonna make people completely colorblind. At this point you might have more luck in UK, or certainly in the US. Blacks are much more integrated in England i think than in France for example. It's largely due to urbanism and the fact all blacks live together with Maghrebis along a few old european generations of immigrants, which created this weird amalgamation of black + hardcore Islamic sub culture, completely isolated in the banlieues, that is getting more and more alien by the day to natives.
Some non whites in the far right are well regarded and useful frankly because they are less likely to go to court for telling the truth. A good example would be Jean Messiah (Egyptian Copt) who keeps trolling in the media and is vehemently against mass immigraton and Islamism. He can be honorary French as he is extremely assimilated culturally, with a perfect French, but even himself makes a distinction, he says he is a "français de branche" (branch French) instead of "FDS" (native). So not everything is black or white but it is for sure very different than myths we see on the internet.
They are also usually very popular with the younger generations since they find these people funny and so disruptive in an ocean of political correctness and woke nonsenses. He is trolling non stop, here with Mila Auriols who got a fatwa on her head and dodged death by Islamists a couple of years ago (used to be a leftist)
