During the industrial age it can be argued that historical and archaeological studies of Mesopotamia was a popular subject among experts, and there was the allure that you speak of, again i doubt it has to do with skin colour as Ancient Egyptians were surely swarthier then ancient Mesopotamians, as evidenced by Egyptian hieroglyphics where they drew the Syrians as lighter then themselves for example. And the Sumerians depicted themselves as white skinned and blue eyed. I really believe that this hatred is an anthroforum phenomenon.
