romania and russia have always had hostile relationships even during communist times. there are no similarities in culture of any kind. romanians aren't familiar in any way with russians. even the eastern bloc it was only a formality, mostly imposed by russia but it did never work as an alliance for romania. when USSR invaded Czechoslovakia in '68, romania did not participate like other coutries (polans, bulgaria or hungary), Ceausescu condemned this invasion and said that no one will set foot in his country ever again. Ceausescu had only his own rules and didn't listen anyone. he even tried with the help of albanian secret services the Gorbachev's removal from power at some point. russians were also trying to get rid of him but he had china's support, so they couldn't do much. he was even afraid of traveling to moscow, he thought he's gonna be killed, poisoned somehow like the other president Gheorghe Gheorghiu Dej. The legend say that he died short after a visit in moscow of some sort of cancer. maybe it's true, maybe it's not, but Ceausescu was convinced about this. romanians weren't allowed to travel, also they has only one national tv channel, so they have never been exposed to russian culture either.
apart from this, even genetically romanian and russians are a world apart, russians being probably the most distant genetically from romanians:

Thanks for expanation!
It's interesting how Croats, Bosniaks and Serbs are genetically closer to Russians than Romanians, Bulgarians and Mecdonians are. East Balkans is less Slavic than West Balkans apart from Albania.
And on the other hand it is flatter and closer to Eastern Europe, so it is to be expected Slavic input will be stronger there.
This is very interesting phenomenom.

Albania is more southern Balkan.
In eastern Balkan survived more paleo-Balkan people than in western Balkan. Before Slavs Hunic, Gothic and Avar invasions have hit more western than eastern Balkan. A lot of Romance speakers of western Balkan were destroyed by Hunic, Gothic and Avar invaders, those who survived mostly moved in few Dalmatian coastal cities. Montenegro is only concinental region of western Balkan where Latin speakers survived in significant number. In mountains of Montenegro Latin speaking tribes have survived until late middle age when they are slavized: Kriči, Mataruge, Mataguže, Bukumiri, Španji.
