I am of British descent, that's like saying Boer people aren't Dutch, I speak my native tongue, my country has reconciled and is allied with the mother country. Americans never distinguished themselves from the British during the Revolution and our differences were't cultural. I am from a Southern family where British is the main admixture and most surnames are British. Being an Ethnicity or belonging to a culture doesn't mean you have to a part of the same national jurisdiction.

Well I mean, a lot of Americans don't even know their heritage. My family on all sides are pretty ingrained in America. Even my German ancestors have been in America for quite some time and they are protestant so there is no real difference. People from the South of the Usa are lot different culturally, some may identify more as Irish or Scottish but most would identify as British and even speak in accent. No worries on the English, just worry when you are getting graded XD, even then you might be able to get away with it.

I'll be honest, English people would find it weird to hear Americans refer to a King as 'our beloved so-and-so.' You might be extremely close cultural kith and kin but you severed your ties by choice, right or wrong, 243 years ago next month.

It is somewhat contradictory because the Revolutionary Americans hated being subjects of the British Crown, they even killed and threatened the Americans pro British.
