Default Average Latitude of Ancestry (in pixels)

Thought it would be an interesting exercise to determine the average latitude of my ancestry, based on the birthplace of the 4 grandparents.

    Here's what I've got.

White = latitue of birthplace for one grandparent
Red = average of their latitudes

If you want to play around too, this is how to do it.

    1. Go to Google Maps
    2. Grab a screenshot of the area
    3. Go to you preferred image editor (I've used the open source Photopea)
    4. Enable Grid view
    5. Zoom in to your place and make a note of the coordinate on the y axis
    6. Then trace a horizontal line following that coordinate (it's easiest to do with a path).
    7. Then fill the path in your preferred colour.
    8. To calculate the average, simply sum the 4 coordinates and divide by 4.

Great idea! But it could also be done with genetic results!

Could you do it for me based on my 24Genetics results? Use weighted average proportional to percentages, and latitude for each dot representing a region:

    ^^^ My results by country:

It takes some time to calculate graphically, but a quick estimate tells me that it should land on the dot for Lviv oblast.

Hmm I doubt it will land so far to the east, if you take into account percentages for each region (each dot) as well.

If we draw a line from north to south across Lviv Oblast - to divide the map into eastern and western parts - then:

    - 13,70% of my ancestry is to the east of Lviv Oblast (including Lviv)

    - 86,30% of my ancestry is to the west of Lviv Oblast (Lviv excluded)

    ^^^
Map (I added percentages only to the eastern half):

    ^^^
I'm sure the "bio-geographical mid-point" of my ancestry estimate will be located somewhere in Poland.

Oh ok, if you mean only the latitude, then I agree that it might land somewhere close to Lviv.

If we add also longitute, then a geographical midpoint of ancestry estimate can be calculated.

Yes, just by the measure latitude, while longitudinally it should land on the Western half of that second biggest blue dot.

Which is close to my hometown (and my 4 grandparents were born all within 50 kilometers from my hometown).

If I remember well birthplaces of grandparents it would be 51° 56' N
Most southern was 51° 46' N and most northern was 52° 03' and as it's quite close I wasn't doing the map with all latitudes
