Honestly it would be really hard to explain that map with just genetic, there isn't a clear South-North or East-West gradient, but more like a central band of countries that score high. Central Italy at 494 with lot of Med admixture, lot of non Europeans migrants and scores that same as France and Iceland, explain that with genetic and the dumb Lynn argument. Also not a lot of genetic different between southern Italy and central Italy but 50 some point of difference, kind of tells you how much education is important really.

There is a lot of cheating going on those tests. Especially East Asian and East European countries are testing only the top 10% of their students.

That's definitely not the case in Romania - all types of schools are tested.

Personally I don't understand why Romania participates at all, since the Romanian curricula have very poor overlap with what is tested in PISA, and weak results are unavoidable - but these results don't mean anything other than the broad disagreement on what is important for students to know by 8th grade.

I just assumed that the ones from Western Europe are quite accurate, of course some Asian countries doing so much better than Japan is counter-intuitive, but who knows...
