Yes. Especially true about older generations living in rural areas. Also "Rumun" (a Romanian) and "Cygan" (a Gypsy) are basically synonyms in Polish and many Poles think that Romanians are the same as Gypsies... Unfortunately there is also a negative word (verb) "cyganić", which means to cheat/to lie.
