In January 1933, some 522,000 Jews lived in Germany. They comprised a high percentage of the educated intellectual classes -including engineers, doctors, lawyers, academics and business owners- being of Jewish origin. German Jews were highly patriotic, for instance, in WW1 "Over 100,000 had served in the Army; 12,000 perished in battle, while another 35,000 were decorated for bravery," with over 80% serving on the front-lines.
During Hitler's pre-Nazi years he had many Jewish friends including a Jewish room-mate in a Vienna boarding-house and, as an artist, was part of a very "Jewish" scene with Jewish Samuel Morgenstern the most loyal buyer of Hitler's paintings. It is known he appreciated the works of Jews such as Felix Mendelssohn and Gustav Mahler and held in high esteem the Jewish apostate and poet Heinrich Heine.
The boarding-house that Hitler was reduced to living in during his difficult "Vienna period" 1909-1913 was even funded by the Rothschild and Gutmann families. Hitler almost died of a very serious lung illness illness in 1904 but was cured by a Jewish doctor Eduard Bloch to whom Hitler would be eternally grateful and award "special protection" to during the Anschluss.
"At this period, Hitler was not yet an overt anti-semitic ; many of his
friends or acquaintances were Jewish and he even painted a
postcard for Dr. Bloch on the back of which he showed his
gratitude for the concern and the care given to his dear mother.
Hanish even wondered whether Hitler was not a Jew himself
because "his beard was very bushy and his feet as wide as those
of the wandering Jews in the desert." According to Hanish's "I was
Hitler's Buddy" published before the war, Hitler was then far from
being anti-semite : he appreciated the Jewish art dealers much
more than the Christian dealers, like the frame manufacturer
Schiefer in the Schumlenbrunnerstrasse, who didn't pay any better
than the Jews. Besides, they only bought again when they had
disposed of the first lot, while the Jewish dealers continued to buy
whether they had sold anything or not.
Hitler often said that it was only with the Jews that one could do
business, because only they were willing to take chances."
Hitler may very well have never developed his deep genocidal hatred for Jews. He might even have held them, rightly, as contributing out of all proportion to their numbers to German society and culture. If Hitler had not hated Jews and either been Jewish-friendly (as he was pre-WW1) or neutral towards Jews (and not introduced the Nuremberg laws) would Germany have lost the war?
My view is that Germany would have won the war if Hitler didn't commit genocide against or perscecute Jews. Germany would have been much more united politically. Millions of men could have been better utilised towards the war effort. Jewish scientists, expelled by Hitler, later developed the Nucleur bomb winning the war for the Allies. Had Jewish scientists been utilised by Germany the result would have been an Atom bomb for Germany thus winning the war for instance Sir Rudolf Peierls, Hans Bethe and Otto Robert Frisch had all left Germany due the the Nuremberg laws.
