Default Cancer victim's widower stunned by 'breach' letter from PayPal

PayPal went after a woman who owed more than $4,000 when she died — saying her death was in “breach” of its policy and leaving her grieving widower to sort out the mess, according to a report.

Howard Durdle was floored when he opened a letter from the electronic payment company that was sent to his home in Buckleberry, England.

It was addressed to his wife, Lindsay, who died on May 31.

“Important: You should read this notice carefully,” the letter read, the BBC reported.

It stated that Lindsay had an outstanding balance of Ł3,240.72 — or about $4,300.

Why are you surprised? Death doesn't mean an automatic write-off of debts. She will have a will, possibly insurances, possibly money in an account or property (or a share in property). It's quite normal for companies, the tax deptpartment and so forth, to recover these debts from an estate.

This is why I haven't donated to TA yet - I don't use PayPal because it's scummy.

You'd have a very different view if you were lets say a plumber and you provided a service for someone and instead of getting paid for your services you are told "the person who hired you is dead and so no one is going to pay you."

She has an estate. It's only right that the estate covers the cost she would have to pay if she was alive. I doubt the husband was unaware of the bill unless it was customary for his wife to spend quite an amount of money online without saying a word to her husband about it. Me thinks he's trying to get out of paying the bill, which he is responsible for as her husband.

    For the deceased:

It was narrated from Thawbaan (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:

“Whoever dies free from three things – arrogance, cheating and debt – will enter Paradise.”
    ...

And had Paypal followed the sunnah:

It is narrated on the authority of Abu Umaamah may Allaah be pleased with him that the Prophet , said: "Whoever would be pleased that Allaah Would Shelter him under His Shade on the Day when there will be no shade except His, let him alleviate the debt of an insolvent person or grant him remission." What I take from this is Paypal is keeping this unfortunate lady from paradise.

Don't fuck with Paypal: they'll ruin your after life.

Yes, your soul can end up in limbo due to Earthly debts...does that not make sense?

Once again we see Islam being a religion more concerned with the material world than the spiritual world.

Man who just died: "Oh my goodness. I just got hit by a car. Where am I?"

God: "In limbo! You weren't done paying off your student loan before being struck by a car while delivering toys to orphans! For shame!"

    No, it doesn't make sense.

if a dead person doesn't want to pay debt (Lol) and PayPal is not able to do anything to get money back then PayPal has the full right to confiscate her property?
