Great for them, Europeans literally exploted many countries thus taking those resources back "home"

If there's something that utterly changed Japanese society in the last century it was exactly the Western influence that you say that doesn't exist in Japan...

It was almost certainly Japan’s embrace of western modes of living and governing that made them as advanced as they are today. Before that it was backwater and unimportant

Japan's post-war economic recovery was carefully supervised and aided by the West (USA). Of course the characteristic Japanese ethics and spirit of sacrifice for their nation also played an important role but the influence of the West cannot be ruled out.

When the Portuguese arrived in Japan in late 16th century, they said about Japan that it was the only country they (and Europeans at large) had encountered thus far that was on an equal cultural footing with Europe.
