Why did empathy evolve in human beings when it is such a low return trait? Also, most human beings are not deserving of empathy in the first place due to being narcissistic self interest driven people. So why do we have it?

Do you think empathy will die off with each generation or is it a trait that will stay in humanity?
Exactly the opposite, wise empathy is rewarded greatly. What we have today in large amounts is not that but a type of corrupt projection of one's own evil.

People choose to empathize with people who don't deserve it. For example a woman will empathize with a woman who's just had an abortion and is crying about it... when that's not at all the correct reaction.

    Very true.
But that’s the thing, as an empath you are drawn to help those who are broken. And most of the time it’s unhealthy and even undeserving people but that’s now how we look at it.

I think an empat would be much better off in the company of happy and friendly people rather than in the company of "sociopaths and unhealthy and even undeserving people".

We are much better off with nontoxic people.
This is a downfall for us because we also like helping people. It’s in our nature, we empathize. And a lot of the times those people are damaged and take a toll on us.

Too much empathy is a mental disorder, it's better if you reserve your empathy for people who truly need it.
