Default The man who says he hasn't eaten or drunk for 70 years

Why are eminent doctors taking him seriously?

There are few people, however busy their lives, unable to remember the last meal that they consumed. But Prahlad Jani is one of them.

And the reason is that the last morsel of food that he says passed his lips did so in the early years of World War II.

‘I can’t recall exactly what it was,’ the 82-year-old Indian admits. ‘It was such a long time ago.’

During the 70-odd years since, Mr Jani says he has eaten not so much as a single grain of rice nor consumed a drop of water. And while such an extended gap between meals might be expected to have a fatal impact on the activities of one so deprived, this octogenarian says he’s never felt better.

Interesting. Well, even just making it 15 days is impressive. Although I could probably do the same if I simply sat still the entire time; I once made it 8 days without food, at least, because I wasn't hungry.

I tend to believe in voodoo science more than most people. It would be amazing if magical yogis and the like really did exist.

The story is quite obviously fraudulent. This man being "examined" by the same "doctor" every time, other experts being denied permission to investigate the case ... that's enough to send the BS detector into the red. Besides the absurd initial claim, of course.

I have no doubt whatsoever that the human body may have contain powers within it that we don't yet fully understand. But giving any credence to these kinds of charlatans is not the way to discovering them.

Why? (genuinly interested, I don't see the fascination with the mystical myself).

Everything I have ever read states that the human body can survive a maximum of six days without water, though most won’t get past three.

This man claims he hasn’t eaten or drank for seventy years. There are three possibilities, one he really is some form of magician, two he has survival knowledge that would put the SAS to shame, three its a con.

Since I don’t believe in “magic” option one is out. I doubt he can beat the world’s elite forces when it comes to survival, so I’m left with three it’s a con.

Now to find how he pulled the trick off…..

It's called sun-eating. There are people (yogas) who can live without food and water for years, but never heard of such a long period before.

I'm afraid that the story is a bad joke. It's rather simple: A body needs energy to exist. To keep the organs and metabolism working, to keep the level of body temperature at almost 37°. Everything on the world has to use or waste something to create energy, it's a steady process of creation and consumption. If you want to keep a fire burning you have to scorch wood. If you want to start a rocket you have to burn fuel to create the energy. Stars waste elements like hydrogen or helium for nuclear fusion. If stars run out of fuel they die.

Creating energy from nothing. That's the idea of a perpetuum mobile and impossible. This man is a good liar but no organic perpetuum mobile.

It's said that sun-eaters get their energy directly from the sun, like the plants and they don't need food for the purpose. There are few documented cases as I've said, however not for so long periods.

...if so, then he was a corpse almost 70 years ago.

    No food or fluids?

    He lies.
