Awesome links! I have a distant cousin who chose to participate in the Clan Donald USA DNA project. From what I was told, his readings, rather than being Norse, were quite Irish, like the readings of most of the McDonalds. There are those, around 15%, who have Norwegian/ Icelandic genetic markers, and all the chiefs of the Clan Donald septs hold lineal descent from Somerled, the Nordic/ Gaelic grandfather of the founder of Clan Donald. I'm thinking that the rest of them descend from Irish crofters and fishermen who settled on land claimed by a particular chief whose clan name they took for their own.

Yes indeed many of the MacDonalds are of different paternal line origins than the chiefs of the clan. The chiefs who descend from Somerled are definitely of Norse descent in the paternal line and their haplogroup is R1a. There are many other MacDonalds though that belong haplogroup R1b and other haplogroups that obviously have different male line ancestors than the chiefs yet they are still part of the same big clan. They probably took on the name of MacDonald and became part of the clan because like you say they lived on lands controlled by the MacDonald chiefs and also for protection.

Yeah, my cousin's YDNA is R1b1a2a1a1b4, L21+, P66-, M37-, M222-, L743-, DF21-. That was interpreted for me to mean that our branch of the McDonalds were Irish and Scots Celts. Being as I am an I1 on my father's side, my direct paternal ancestor was either an Anglo- Saxon or a Dane. I've no idea about me, but my maternal grandfather was almost stereotypically Celtic, complete with fair skin, freckles and red hair.

A good video about the history of Clan MacNeil. Genetics has shown that many of them are indeed of Norse descent in the paternal line.

From what I've heard there's tons of MacNeils/McNeils on Canadas Nova Scotian Atlantic coast, like Cape Breton.
