It's not the same but very similar. We had 1-2% gypsies 50 years ago, but since hungarian reproduction rate dropped and the number of ethnic hungarians is decreasing since early 80s while gypsy reproduction rate remained the same/decreased little they are 10% now. Some estimate it's more than 10% even
I believe this theory that Bulgaria have large gypsy population because of the "gypsy import" during communist time, is a legend only

Yeah, Bulgaria is a failed country. It could be interesting to compare Bulgaria and Belarus, two post-communist countries with similar initial demographics and economical achievements but with the different paths chosen - Bulgaria is in the EU, all pro-western and democratic; Belarus, on the contrary, is generally regarded as the most Soviet country of the former USSR and is a member of the Eurasian Customs Union.
Population in 1990: Bulgaria 8 700 000 Belarus 10 200 000
Population in 2014: Bulgaria 7 200 000 (-17,2 %) Belarus 9 500 000 (-6,9 %)
Natural decrease per 1000 for the last five years:
Bulgaria: -3.5; -4.6; -5.1; -5.4; -5.2 (one of the fastest shrinking population in the world)
The future population estimates by the National Statistical Institute of Bulgaria:
Year Population
2020 6,950,436
2030 6,519,217
2060 5,384,040
Belarus: -3.1; -2.7; -1.2; -0.7; -0.3 (actually the population decline has almost come to a halt)
GDP per capita (PPP) according to the World Bank data: Belarus 17 600 Bulgaria 15 700
The trend since the mid-90's (Belarus started from the lower figures but has surpassed Bulgaria recently):
belarus-gdp-per-capita-ppp.pngbulgaria-gdp-per-capita-ppp.png
Inequality-adjusted human development index (IHDI):
Belarus 0.726
Bulgaria 0.685
The quality of life is higher in Belarus.

Lol, truth hurts. Bulgaria will cease to exist in a hundred of years from now with the current birth rates.
As for Russia and AIDS, it's true this is an issue for Russia. Still the scale of the poblem is similar to that of the USA than African countries.
Country Adult (15-49) prevalence %
Swaziland 26.5 [1] 2012 est.
Botswana 23.4 [1] 2011 est.
Lesotho 23.3 [1] 2011 est.
South Africa 19.1 [11] 2013 est.
Zimbabwe 14.9 [1] 2011 est.
Namibia 13.4 [1] 2011 est.
Zambia 12.5 [1] 2011 est.
Mozambique 11.3 [1] 2011 est.
Russia 1.1 [1] 2011 est.

But the gypsy population growth rate in Bulgaria is negative too, how will that work? Bulgaria's fertility rate has grown a lot since the 90's, it use to be something like 0.9 children per woman during the 90's, now it's 1.5 or something, we'll get there, don't worry. As for Macedonia, it will be the 3rd Albanian state on the Balkans in maybe 25 years or so
