At the moment there are no one who is better than Bashar Al Assad, unless you want to create an Islamic state of Syria like in Afghanistan.

Perhaps now few parties in the conflict are better than Assad (only the FSA is decent), but certainly there were many that could've taken his place. Make no mistake, the Assad regimes have been despotic and incredibly corrupt for the decades they have ruled over Syria. They have stagnated the country and are responsible for instigating the conflict.

Syria is not any more 'civilized' than Somalia...the Arab spring convinced me that Arabs are where Somalis were back in 1969-1989. Under the 'secular gov't' of Siad Barre, tribalism was criminalized. So when someone complained about the obvious preferential treatment towards Siad Barre's clan (the Mareexaan and his mom's clan the Ogaden) they would be imprisoned. Just like Assad, he rose through the military ranks and his political support was from his paternal and maternal clans (Mareexaan and the Ogaden) infact, his invasion of Ethiopia in 1977 to 'liberate Ogaden' was ONLY to consolidate his power base, and not for some fake Pan-Somali bs.

Just like Assad's Shabihha...Siad Barre had his "Faqash" paramilitary thugs, and guess what were their backgrounds? Yup, his clan members made 99.99999% of them. Dont EVER think Levantine societies are more sophisticated than ours, they operate under the same premise.

Indeed this why the regime tried to out law tribal affiliations especially in the Bedouin dominated Southeastern Syria. This is the main reason why schools were built there, and it was used to destroy the tribal identities. This has proven to be futile, and that the Bedouins still identify with their respective tribes. Also many Bedouins often refused to go to school. Also their area was the most desolate and poor, despite having much of the gas and oil fields. Now many Bedouins are hard pressed as they are being attacked by the regime and the ISIS heretics.
