Recommend a city!

I've decided to visit northern Italy next month and have so far narrowed my choice of city down to Bergamo, mainly due to its proximity to the Alps, Switzerland and other northern Italian cities. What other cities do you recommend in the area? Thanks.

Verona is also the 'goldcity' of Italy - if you want to buy something special in gold - for your sweethart - that's the place to go.

Venice is a tourist trap. The canals are cool, but that's about it. Florence is by far the best city north of Rome, if you have a chance to visit it, go there.
