I can only recommend you to learn language, so you will be able to read various sources and make your own conclusion.
What you can find in english is usualy biased information to fit certain agenda and/or some pseudo history.

You also should have more trust in words of your ancestors than in some contemporary written fantasies, pseudo history and plain bullshit. For example, as you know, you ancestor called himself russian from Little Russia, he called ukrainians people from Galicia, he stated that they are different people than him.

LMAO. I think it must be the old photo/fashion of the time period. I have the original photo in a frame here in my home office. It has not been altered in anyway. So, that head was attached to that body, afaik. So, does the head look Ukrainian or Russian? hahaha.

No, this is not the case. Ukrainian language would be most practical to read Ukrainian history FROM Ukrainian sources. This would be my ultimate preference. HOWEVER, from a genealogical view, Russian is most practical as a starting point. My genealogical records are in Russian, with a couple in Polish. Ukrainian was not used in administrative documents until 1991 (?).
