A new study adds to evidence that blueberries are a helpful player in maintaining health. Researchers from the University of Exeter found that drinking concentrated blueberry juice once a day enhanced brain function in small group of healthy older adults.

Along with a variety of vitamins, blueberries are packed with flavonoids, which contain anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

They found that those who drank the blueberry supplement showed significant increases in cognitive function, blood flow to the brain, and activation of the brain while performing the tests, compared to those that received the placebo. There were also improvements in working memory.

Previous research has shown that cognitive function is better maintained in older adults that eat a diet full of plant-based foods, possibly due to the flavonoids found in them.
