I consider modern day Turkey to be an Asian country although it matters little to me how we categorize it. Whether Turkey should be its own country or not is a different question, where I am a sceptic. It would be much better if Turkey was in the hands of Europeans altogether, but as things are it is not that way at all. By the way, Turks, as far as I know, are not an ethnic group. That's not just something I made up, but it has been confirmed by numerous Turkish citizens that I have had the pleasure to talk with. Generally I have found "Turks" to be reasonable regardless of ethnicity, with few exceptions. As an ethnoplurist I tend to oppose the Turk movement or Turkish Turanism, whatever it should be called. Is Turkey Middle Eastern? Well I really care very little how we categorize Turkey, as I said, but when someone says Middle East, I do not think about Turkey.

What do you define as "Southern European & EE culture"? Even those cultures are heavily Persian influenced, the food for example. Culture is relative and fluid.
Turkey belongs to the Middle-East because "Middle-East" is a geopolitical concept, your national interest are fought in the Middle-East against or with countries like Iran, Saudi Kingdom of Arabia or Israel. While the Balkans and Caucasus are not direct interest but rather a sphere of influence.
