Slovakia, Austria Voice Support for Croatia's June EU Goal
The foreign ministers of the two countries, who visited Zagreb on Tuesday and met with top officials, said they believe that Croatia is ready to complete its EU entry talks in June and will do their best to convince other EU countries of that.
Austria's Foreign Minister Michael Spindelegger told reporters he wanted to publicly state that his country hopes that Croatia will become an EU member as soon as possible.
Slovak Foreign Minister Mikulas Dzurinda said Zagreb is ready to complete the entry talks in June, adding that he would work intensively with his Austrian colleague to help Croatia in the last few metres before the finish line.
While noting that the EU isn't heaven, the two foreign ministers said there was no better solution for Austrians, Slovakians or Croats.
They said that their visit to Zagreb was motivated by the wish to show that the EU must overcome its enlargement fatigue.
Asked what would happen if Croatia did not complete the talks in June, namely if this would send a bad message to Croatia and the rest of the region, Dzurinda said that he did not want to speculate about the possibility, maintaining that one should make the most of the current momentum.
