Default Which Entity Is Responsible For Spreading The English Language?

Was it the British Empire, over a period spanning two/three centuries? Or was the spreading of English due to the rise of the world superpower of America: the United States?

EDIT. Can somebody add another 'l' to 'Equaly" please?

The British definitely, from when they colonized so much of the world back in the 16-17 hundreds, it's like that quote, "the sun never sets on the british empire" they spread almost everywhere and brought their language with them....

The British Empire of course. The Americans just talk over the ties which already existed.

I vote Brits. The USA Inc. is a proxy for the Queen. And she appoints only relatives of hers for president

I heard of a conspiracy theory like that. It says that America never gained independence and still pays / owes taxes to the monarchy and is ruled by the City of London.

The British Empire. It brought English to North America, parts of Africa, Australia and New Zealand.
