There are many accounts from the American Revolution that detail the many privations and traumas of the American soldiers that partook in it - the most famous example being the narrative of Joseph Plum Martin. But few accounts from the British perspective exist, and the ones that we do know of are often quite dry, and don't offer a great deal of insight into how the British redcoats felt about the war, or how it affected them in the long-term. One of the exceptions to this, however, is the narrative of John Robert Shaw, a British soldier of the 33rd Regiment, who partook in several notable battles before being captured and eventually deserting to the American side. This is his story.
