I will begin this thread with the Saint Panteleimon Monastery, located on Plaošnik, in Ohrid. This Monastery is probably the most iconic landmark in Macedonia, the equivalent to the Eiffel tower to the French.
The Monastery was built during the reign of Boris I of Bulgaria, Knyaz (prince) of the first Bulgarian empire, and was supposedly built by Saint Clement of Ohrid, disciple of Saint Cyril and Saint Methodius. This monastery was built on top of an even older church from the 4th century AD.
Originally, it was built as a university to teach the Glagolitic alphabet used to translate the Bible into Old Church Slavonic.
In the 15th century, the monastery was converted into a Mosque by the Ottomans, but restored back to a monastery later on.
It is still the site of major archaeological excavations.
