"Rather than threatening Italian traditions, Kyenge said the asylum-seekers now heading for Italy from sub-Saharan Africa and Syria could be taught to revive trades now being abandoned by Italians, especially if they were allowed to set up shop in the medieval hilltop villages that are rapidly being abandoned up and down the country.

Take, for example, the Calabrian town of Riace, which has reversed depopulation by welcoming the migrants landing on rickety boats after a perilous Mediterranean crossing and setting them up in trades such as dressmaking, joinery, pottery or glass-blowing.

"This is a good practice, using depopulated villages where there are many empty houses, where old farms, shops and workshops can be reopened," said Kyenge, who visited Riace in August. "It offers a welcome to migrants, it's good for the national economy and good for saving trades that risk disappearing."

If traditions are dying and the rural communities are being depopulated why not have people not only fill in the void but also assimilate quite easily into society through their jobs that were and are the basis of Italian identity?

Italian politicians are a nightmare for the people whatever colour they are, it seems.

It would be even better if they received Eritiean, Somali, and Libyan people who already are familiar with Italian culture and customs as well to make the transition even smoother. Often times people say immigrants are useless from under developed nations because they are farmers, fishers, artisans but now that someone is saying have those skilled labourers fill the niches Italians don't want it's a bad thing to say?

This is like in Japan with an ageing that needs people to take care of them and farmers who are dying leaving land to be encroached by forest yet not wanting immigrants to come in; there has to be some middle ground because quite honestly you cannot have a large 1st nation without an agricultural class.
