Why are northern Europeans smarter than southern Europeans?

They are not. If they were they would not have been living in caves and eating reindeer before Greco-Romans civilized them.

For example

They have much more pioneers who build latest, high tech equipment and set up cutting edge labs in their universities to which students from southern Europeans countries come to learn so they don't fall behind. Why are they unable to do this?

From my understanding anyone who mentions Greco-Romans knows very little to nothing.

On a serious note; they are, at least if IQ is a good measure of intelligence. The consensus is that IQ is a good measure of intelligence. And appealing to history is useless. This is not only because you can't infer from the past that because it was in the past it must also be the case now, but also because you're contradicting yourself since Northern Europeans are far ahead of Southern Europeans today.

Smarter?

I don't think they are smarter, they just have different cultures/ mentality.

Again IQ/ intelligence isn't just one thing.

We have: Artistic/creative intelligence, Social intelligence, linguistic intelligence (capable of learning multiple or many languages), strategic/ planning intelligence, mathematical intelligence and writing/ reading. Maybe more, but these are the basics.

Now the question is, which of these do Southern European (or vice-verse) have that the other doesn't?

i don't think IQ really is a good meaure of intelligence Italy or Spain are in the highest IQ of Europe, the own Einstein had a very different opinion about what is intelligence
