Case: Nightclubs

These dark, loud and humid caves are bit of a mystery for me and many others. During my life I have been to a couple of them, mostly because of student events/parties. I'll take a closer look in case anyone is actually interested in this stuff.

What actually attracts people to these lairs of hedonism? I'm not sure if this is the case worldwide but at the very least here drinks are expensive (beer can easily cost 5x the amount it does in a grocery store), music is VERY loud (having a conversation is difficult to say the least) and you have to wait in line to get inside, to get yourself something to drink, to take a piss...And the toilets are often in disgusting state. The list goes on and on.

I have noticed one funny theme here: People aren't very rational when choosing a nightclub to spend their night at. The most popular nightclub in a city near my hometown is also the most expensive, most densely occupied (finding an empty seat let alone table is very hard) and in no way special. When I asked a couple associates of mine why they go there the answer was simple: "Well everyone else goes there". The herd mentality of your regular nightclubber is sometimes astonishing. Many times I have wondered whether they truly enjoy their time there.

I firmly believe that the opposite (or same) sex is the main reason people decide to go clubbing. Sure, almost everyone goes clubbing with friends here, but there are plenty of fun activities they could do instead. It's not always about getting laid either; I personally know a young woman who likes to party every week yet I don't think she has ever picked up a guy from a nightclub. Finns are very shy (unless they are drunk) and approaching the opposite sex is very hard for them outside of clubs and bars. Social situations are much less awkward when both parties are drunk or high or whatever It's quite entertaining to see your regular introverts dancing in "the cesspool of shame". I guess some people believe they can find the love of their live there...Well, who am I to judge in the end?

Have I ever had fun time in a nightclub? No, not really. That's why my visits are few and it has been a long time since I decided to humour my associates by joining them in their nightly quest. Thankfully I have been blessed (or cursed, depends who you ask) with a personality disorder or two and its easy for me to approach women. When I want to have fun with my associates I arrange us to play board games, poker, Rock Band, SingStar or something. Nothing beats the unholy combination of wine and karaoke. Who needs hundreds of drunken fools around themselves anyway?

Please share your views and experiences with nightclubs.

tl;dr I think people visit nightclubs because they crave for company of the opposite (or same) sex and they don't get enough "action" elsewhere. In my opinion nightlife is overrated.

I only go to nightclubs to get out of them and chain-smoke while chatting with foreign drunken chicks.

I quit going to nightclubs. don't like those places, and prefer going to bars.

The chance to get laid is probably a factor, I might be willing to participate for that reason as well, but otherwise I agree it's a very unpleasant activity

i only went there (and still go sometimes) for girls and drinking

other than that they have nothing to offer

Nightlife seems like a waste of time unless it's once every 4 months or so. The economic reasons you mentioned amongst others are the main ones to discourage the regular frequency of this activity. It's also too loud and too crowded to properly interact with other people. It might be good for meeting girls but I can think in better, bigger, cheaper places where you can get to meet girls. I find easier to approach girls in a more spontaneous way in any random day activity than specifically on a nightclub. A good number of girls don't go to nightclubs alone but with their boyfriends, basically nullifying any possible aspect clubbing could ever have.

Practicing this lifestyle is just being overly consumeristic. I prefer going to concerts of bands I can really enjoy.

It usually smells like ass, the combination of sweat and people not wiping their ass holes thoroughly but where else are you going to meet the opposite sex if you don't go to school?
