Default Alain de Benoist - A Brief History of the Idea of Progress

"A Brief History of the Idea of Progress" by Alain de Benoist

The idea of progress seems one of the theoretical presuppositions of modernity. One can even regard it, not without reason, as the real "religion of Western civilization." Historically, this idea was formulated earlier than it is generally thought, around 1680, during the quarrel of Ancients and Moderns, in which Terrasson, Charles Parrault, the Abbé of Saint-Pierre, and Fontenelle participated. It was then developed on the initiative of a second generation, including principally Turgot, Condorcet, and Louis Sebastien Mercier.

I really enjoy de Benoist's work even if we disagree on certain issues, but this is great. "Progress", modern science and all of its myriad technical marvels, which, to the average mind, are so seductive that the scientistic world view is accepted as superior to "outdated" metaphysical principles. Technology serves to ensnare man in a strictly material universe. A trap and a prison. But a fairly pleasant one. But this time in the pleasant prison may now be coming to an end as the forces of modernism begin to reveal their true face.

"Free, do you call yourself? Then I would hear your ruling thought, and not merely that you have escaped from a yoke. Are you one of those who had the right to escape from a yoke? Many a one has cast away his last worth when he has cast away his servitude. Free from what? What does that matter to Zarathustra! But your fiery eyes should tell me: free for what?" - Thus Spoke Zarathustra
