A large amount of diversity could undermine a sense of shared identity or, more importantly, introduce conflicting goals which fracture a society because people are pulling in different directions. I'm not a fan of society for its own sake but, inasmuch as it's a tool to help me get what I want, I'd like to see some stable norms which allow it to function.
