From what I have read the USA can ask China to assist since China currently has a space vehicle to get to the ISS, or the USA could quickly modify one of the cargo crafts to be able to transport human but not sure how safe this would be.

Thats pretty sad that the US, which is the most advanced spacefaring nation, would have to be dependent on others even if its just temporarily.

I agree, but the space shuttle was a pretty bad death machine it killed 14 people. It killed more people than any other space program. However, I agree they really badly need a replacement and fast.
