Some do want independence but many Azeris are pro-Iranian and do view themselves as Iranians and part of the Iranian world. I am not Iranian or Azeri, and not even Turkish/Turkic. The fact if Azerbaijan the republic was not needed for geopolitical and strategic importance in the Caucasus, most likely it would have shifted easily to the Iranian world. If you don't believe what I am saying just go to any Persian/Iranian forums, and even some anthroforums and you will see many Iranian Azeris feel very Iranian, not so much with the Azeris in the republic who have become closer to Turkey. Although they might be not representative but many high politicans and nationalist in Iranian are of Azeri origins. Azeris being Shias makes them very easy to assimilate to Iranian culture, the only exception is Shia Arabs from Ahwaz, that's because Shiaism they follow is a product of their own culture, as you know all Shia sects ultimate origin is Yemen as the movement appeared among Yemenite tribes.
