SourceAfrican-Americans are two to three times more likely than other populations to be hospitalized for preventable health conditions — including diabetes, asthma and heart disease — according to a new report by the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development.
Hispanics had the second-highest rates of hospitalization and the highest for one of the conditions measured: severe vomiting and/or diarrhea in children. Whites had the highest mortality rates from congestive heart failure. Asian/Pacific Islanders had the highest death rates for heart attack, stroke, pneumonia, coronary artery bypass graft surgery and coronary artery treatment.
The second annual report on racial and ethnic disparities in health care in California shows general improvement across most of the 16 measures of outpatient care and 15 hospital inpatient measures studied, but big disparities remain. The data cover 1999 through 2007.
“Racial and ethnic disparities in health outcomes raise concerns that require the attention of health care providers, policy-makers and communities alike,” OSHPD director Dr. David Carlisle said in a news release.
